“Back Like We Never Left”: MusiqInTheMagiq Album Review

MusiqInTheMagiq Album Review
"Back Like We Never Left"
This album is a nice step in a never ending journey of classic music from Musiq Soulchild. In his 6th studio album, Musiq stays true to form and doesn’t stray too far away from his classic sound. Musiqinthemagiq starts off in the tune of a funky two step dance track with “Anything” where Musiq tells his partner that he doesn’t mind telling her whatever she wants to know even if he’s somewhere and there’s a woman present. The track is a good starter, but it seems as if guest rapper Swizz Beatz didn’t quite understand the concept of the song, rapping “five minutes I can have you superstar status, ten minutes I can have you global status…so don’t worry about nothing I got the rest and that other dude is old now, let the music touch your soul child”(insert wack rapper jokes here). “Single” is a song that many people can relate to that have ever met the right person at the wrong time (“if I met you when I was single, we probably could’ve been something more”). Even though it’s an up-tempo track, it’ll feel like the saddest song for those that can deeply relate to the song’s lyrics so prepare to reminisce. The best track on the album “Sayido” is an up-tempo love ballad where Musiq delivers a crisp falsetto throughout the song much like So Beautiful. After the first listen I guarantee you’ll be hitting the repeat button (that is all). “Lovecontract” (resembles a song left off Raphael Saadiq’s The Way I See It) is the cliché’ “I’m ready to settle down with you and change” song and what a coincidence those are almost the lyrics. Don’t be mistaken though, the track has a good feel to it and I’m sure the “old school” crowd can show an appreciation for it. To Me, “Silver&Gold” sounds like a Jazmine Sullivan song (idk Kanye shrug) and sounds like a nice “movie song/closing credits”. It’s yet another cool up-tempo track, but definitely worth the listen or download. Musiq must’ve been really impressed with his ability to sustain his falsetto after recording So Beautiful, because like track 3 he delivers a worthy falsetto throughout “Waitingstill”. The song is somewhat through two perspectives : the proud lover in waiting and the object of her affection working hard on the road exclaiming “I do it for you, I do it for us…I hope you’re waiting still”. The head-knodder track “Backtowhere” is where the album slows down, but not by much. The song is a powerful track and Musiq delivers it with pure emotion “it’s not fair I can’t go back to where I was with you”(if not Sayido, this will probably be the second single). In “Dowehaveto” Musiq is the fed up lover that tells his other “I just want the girl I fell in love with, and if you can’t be her I don’t want to be with you”. This is a very vivid track where the lyrics can not only be felt, but also seen credited by Musiq’s delivery. “Befriends” is a slow groove where he pleads “I don’t want to be friends cause I done already started loving you” even going as far to say “you kiss me like you love me…you make love to me like you love me”(I need female friends like Musiq). “Yes” is a cool laid back version of Dontchange that sounds like an anthem for lovers. “Medicine” is a decent groove track, but there’s nothing real special to review or try to say except that it does have a sexy vibe to it. For those that go for the regular length album, “Likethesun” is the closing track and much like the previous song, it’s another ordinary groove (somewhat of a filler though it makes for a good closer). “Clumsylove”(bonus track/deluxe version) has a nice beat and well balanced lyrics, a feel good track worth downloading (could’ve been the closing track for the regular length album or just included in the tracklist). “Goodgirl”(bonus track/deluxe version) has a cool beat, but I would’ve preferred it as a hidden track. Although it’s still a strong track, it’s not worth paying extra for a deluxe version. It sounds like it was written for an R&B singers album, but to give Musiq some credit I probably wouldn’t care for it if it were sung by someone else (yes Musiq just made it work). All in all, Musiqinthemagiq is a solid album with good music perfectly compiled together to form another classic for Musiq Soulchild. Definitely worth the purchase!!!
